Back in October and again in February members of the International Indian Treaty Council and the American Indian Movement refused to cross our picket line at pier 33. They conducted their ceremonies on the dock, participated in our picket and stood in solidarity with the displaced workers of the IBU-ILWU and MM&P.
In February, Oakland's Intertribal Friendship House (IFH), the oldest American Indian Urban community center in this country, announced that it is facing possible closure. IFH has to raise $30,000 by March 23rd, to pay current and back taxes.
Many of those involved with the Intertribal Friendship House not only stood in solidarity with us on the dock in October and February but were instrumental in the organizing of those actions and are strong allies of ours in our fight against Hornblower and Alcatraz Cruises. The bonds of solidarity were strong during the sunrise ceremony in October. Lets show our support for those who have supported us time and time again.

IFH started out as a place for American Indians from all over the country to meet and see one another after they were relocated to the Bay Area during the 1940’s through the 1960’s as a way of having American Indians leave the reservation and assimilate. This effort by the United States government did not work. Over the last 50 years, Intertribal Friendship House has continued to provide services to the Native population in the Bay Area. IFH continues to be a place where "all Natives are welcome," whether it’s as a place to: sit and have a cup of coffee to find out about the latest community events, attend a celebration or funeral, to have ceremonies, or to take classes. IFH's community hopes that the space will continue to be open for future generations to learn about their traditions.
